BC Lions Read, Write & ROAR! Literacy Program

Building Fans Through Literacy: BC Lions x Kidzsmart

The BC Lions have always shown up for their community, but they wanted to create something special for the next generation of superfans. With early literacy as the focus, and classroom engagement as the path, they turned to Kidzsmart to help them connect with kids in schools across BC. Together, we created Read, Write & ROAR!an interactive literacy program that inspires kids to read while staying connected to the team!

The Goal

Support early reading development in classrooms and connect young students to the BC Lions in a way that feels real, fun, and meaningful.

The Challenge

The Lions wanted to expand their community presence and build loyalty with families who might not attend games regularly. To do this, a one-off visit or team-branded worksheet wasn’t going to cut it. They needed a program that would show up consistently for kids, fit easily into teachers’ lesson plans, and bring the Lions to life!

The Solution

Narrative Design: Leo the Lion, the team’s mascot, became the voice of the program, guiding students through reading challenges, goal tracking, and reflections on their progress. The structure was easy for teachers to use and flexible enough to adapt across school districts.

Interactive Learning: Students were encouraged to read in short, focused bursts, then track their time by coloring in sections of a football field – moving from kickoff to touchdown as they built their skills. Pages included football facts, jokes, and movement breaks to keep energy high and attention sharp.

Community Connection: The program didn’t end in the classroom. Kids who completed the program could earn rewards like books, Lions merchandise, and game tickets. Some even got visits from players and Leo himself – creating real memories that deepened their bond with the team!

Kidzsmart created Read, Write & ROAR! – a classroom-ready experience built around reading goals, football fun, and community pride.

The Results

Widespread Adoption: Read, Write & ROAR! was used in over 16 BC school districts and reached more than 20,000 students every year. It’s a program teachers relied on, and kids asked for by name.

Stronger Brand Loyalty: By showing up where families already are (in classrooms, not just stadiums!) the BC Lions have built a stronger, more personal relationship with fans. It’s helped turn casual supporters into long-term community advocates.

Ongoing Engagement: With fresh updates each season, the program stays relevant and fun. And because it’s built around goals and celebration, it encouraged kids to stay involved and invested year after year.

Meaningful Community Impact: Teachers, parents, and school districts continue to praise the program for its impact on student motivation, while the Lions have earned recognition as a team that truly cares about youth development and education.
