Case Studies ❯ BC Hydro Power Smart for Schools Program
BC Hydro
Power Smart for Schools Program
Introduction
BC Hydro, one of Canada’s largest electric utilities, is committed to educating the next generation about energy conservation and sustainability. To do this effectively, BC Hydro needed a fresh, engaging approach that would capture kids’ attention and encourage families to adopt energy-saving habits.
The Goal
BC Hydro set out to change how kids learn about energy. They wanted to reach more students, but they also needed to provide resources that would make the learning stick. Because if kids don’t remember what they learn, how can they make meaningful change?
By integrating play-driven learning into complex topics, BC Hydro inspired young minds, encouraged behavior change, and reinforced the importance of sustainability in everyday life. Ultimately, the goal was to make learning about energy fun.
The Challenge
BC Hydro recognized a disconnect between energy education and younger audiences. When content isn’t engaging or relatable, it’s difficult for kids to retain it. BC Hydro wanted the content to be inclusive and culturally relevant while reflecting the diverse communities it serves.
This meant creating resources that celebrated the diversity of educators and learners across British Columbia, while also honoring the cultural heritage of more than 200 First Nations communities in the region.
The Solution
BC Hydro’s educational programs for Earth Day, Orange Shirt Day, Halloween, Diwali, and Lunar New Year sparked youth interest in energy through rich, inclusive content. Key elements of the solution included:
Cultural Diversity & Community Spirit: Learning materials were aligned with local festivities and traditions, and made widely accessible in English, French, and Mandarin.
STEAM-Focused Engagement: Activities promoted hands-on learning and interactive digital experiences, fostering skill development and meaningful conversations.
Prioritizing Inclusivity and Equity: Resources were developed through decolonial and diversity-informed lenses to ensure relevance and support equitable learning experiences.
Two-Eyed Seeing & Biocultural Diversity Lens: Indigenous knowledge guided the creation of holistic, land-based content that deepened understanding of environmental stewardship.
Celebrating Indigenous Resilience: Storytelling and partnerships helped connect youth to the land, its cultures, and Indigenous heritage.
Equal Access & Inclusion: Educational tools were designed with diverse abilities in mind, following accessibility guidelines from the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Canada.
The Results
By making energy education interactive and engaging, BC Hydro saw increased classroom participation and deeper family involvement. Parents reported their children became more mindful of energy-saving habits, creating a ripple effect of positive change at home.
With significant increases in website traffic, email open rates, and participation in learning activities, BC Hydro has positioned its programs as trusted, go-to resources for educators and students across the province.
