Meet our Art Director, Stacey Hamilton

How long have you worked with Kidzsmart for?

Almost 14 years.

Why did you join the company?

Back when I was in design school, I saw a job posting for Kidzsmart. They were looking for an illustrator and graphic designer to join the team. I was so heartbroken that I was still in school and couldn’t apply, because the description sounded like my dream job. (Spoiler alert: it is!) Fortunately, they had another opening once I had graduated, so I applied.

What do you like about working at Kidzsmart?

I love making content for kids. Getting to design and illustrate every day is a dream come true. One thing I didn’t expect from this job is that I’m always learning interesting little fun facts about different subjects, which I really enjoy. And I know a LOT of kids’ jokes! I also really love having a small, tight knit team where everyone works together well.

What are you looking forward to at the moment?

I’m always looking forward to the next new client. Any chance to develop a new brand direction, pitch new characters, develop colour palettes and mood boards – I love having the opportunity to do that.

What are the values that drive you?

I care very deeply about having respect for kids as an audience and making thoughtful content for them. Content for kids doesn’t need to be mindless, or dated, or a mish-mash of clip art. I want to be proud of everything I have a part in making, and have it be something I’m excited to share with my own family. 

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Away from work I’m mostly in Mom-mode, spending time with my family. I love drawing and reading, graphic novels, long walks, horror movies, and sleeping.

What is your favorite quote or best piece of advice you’ve been given?

I’ve always really liked this quote by Paula Scher after she sketched up the iconic logo design for Citibank during a client meeting: “It took me a few seconds to draw it, but it took me 34 years to learn how to draw it in a few seconds.”
