Black Bear Diner is a fast-growing, community-oriented, family dining concept that offers a one-of-a-kind experience in a fun, bear-themed atmosphere. In 2009, Kidzsmart initiated a new design and format to align Black Bear Diner’s kids’ program even more closely with their branding. The result was The Beary Tale Times, a quarterly newspaper format that features a themed story, fun games, and their kids’ menu. This newspaper format echoes the wholesome feel of the Black Bear Diner brand, as well as a welcome solution to their budgetary requirements.

In response to a new brand focus on healthy living in 2013, Black Bear Diner asked Kidzsmart to integrate this message into their kids’ program. We created “Fit Cubs: Beary, Beary Healthy”, a full page of games and messaging that focuses on nutrition, exercise and getting outside.

The Response

In 2016, the Black Bear Diner program earned the PTPA™ Seal of Approval. The PTPA™ (Parent Tested Parent Approved) program brings 70,000+ volunteer parent consumers together with products to test them in real-life settings. Black Bear Diner has consistently received positive feedback for The Beary Tale Times.

Family meals represent nearly one in four (23%) food service occasions, with an average check of $20.83, higher than the average of $12.60 for all other occasions.  Families are busy, and the ability to connect with each other and catch up over a meal is especially valuable, both for parents and kids.
